Presents two methods of measuring ionization energy--photo- ionization and electron bombardment. Shows the use of a high vacuum system with a simple conductivity cell. Demonstrates the photo-ionization of sodium by the use of mercury light source and monochromator with sodium and three inert gases. Uses animation to show what occurs on the atomic level during the ionization process. Explains the relation of ionization energy to chemical reactivity.
